When’s the Last Time Your Employees Smiled?

I had the good fortune today to observe a young man at the register of my local burrito shop who had a smile that would make even the late Paul Newman envious. This guy’s smile was contagious. So much so, that I could hear a number of people comment to him how nice it was to encounter someone who enjoyed their job so much. They did so as they threw bills into the tip jar.

When’s the last time one of your employees smiled? Yes, I know how stressful work can be these days with everyone being asked to do more with less, but that’s just an excuse for allowing people who are miserable in their jobs to stay. And you can’t tell me this guy was smiling because he was pulling in a six-figure income.

Compare this experience to my trip today to the local mall. Not too many smiles going on there in spite of the fact that the stores were fairly empty. It appeared that the workers there were doing a job and nothing more. Too bad the buyers at Macy’s weren’t doing their job, but that’s a topic for another blog on the real reason why retail sales are flat.
