What are You Doing to Prepare Yourself for Management?

I was recently asked to comment about my observations, as a result of the work I am doing with my clients. Here was my response:

Many employers believe their employees are happy to have a job. This may very well be the case, but they believe this means people are happy to be working for their employer. This couldn't be further than the truth. As soon as the floodgates open (and they will) we will see what I'm calling, running of the bulls American style. (Click here to read my Fast Company Expert Blog posting on this topic Running of the Bulls American Style.) Companies need to be preparing their next level of management right now to move into these spots that will soon be open. They may also be able to prevent this from occurring if their employees believe they are willing to invest in the development of their people.

As the stock market continues to rebound, we'll see people who were holding on, begin to retire. This is yet another reason to prepare an organization for the gaps that will occur as soon as the Boomer start exiting in full force. We will also see more generational conflict as mature people find themselves working for people young enough to be their children.

So what are you doing to prepare yourself or your people for the new roles they will be taking on in the not so distant future? Now is the time to invest. Resources are available and you still have time to lock in the best people possible. Wait much longer and you'll have to settle for number two. That may be fine if you are Avis, but as for me, I'd rather work with the best.

I'm interested in hearing what you are doing (not what you plan to do) to prepare yourself or your organization for the recovery. Please post your comments right here on my blog.

P.S. In conjunction with the January launch of my book, Suddenly in Charge! Managing Up, Managing Down, Succeeding All Around, I am putting together several leadership groups for people who are suddenly in charge. Participation will be limited and all participants must be approved, prior to enrolling. This way we'll ensure  the fit is right for all involved. We'll meet virtually and we may meet in person, depending on what's in the best interest of the group. E-mail me today at Roberta@yourhrexperts.com to learn more about this incredible opportunity!
