I had a crazy aha moment this morning as I was almost run down by the Boston College track team while walking around the reservoir.
Parents paying almost $92,000 a year (plus the cost of daily Starbucks runs), which equates to $368,000 per kid for a college education.
And for what?
The most recent estimates put unemployment for recent college graduates around 4.6%–5.8% in 2025, compared with roughly 4.4%–4.5% for high school graduates with no college and about 5.4%–5.5% for those with less than a high school diploma, depending on the month and definition used. In short, recent grads are facing an elevated rate versus the broader pool of adults with bachelor’s degrees, and only a modest edge—or even parity—relative to noncollege young workers, depending on the cut of data and month observed.
I used to be one of these people who thought that you should get a college degree no matter what. I’m rethinking my position on this.
